Concepts
As in most card games, the aim in poker is to have the best hand in order to win the pot. Here are some important principles to keep in mind.
Table position
Your position at the table determines when it is your turn. The later your turn is, the more info you have on your opponents. So take this into account.
Tip: Are you playing first? Focus only on strong hands and avoid bluffing!
Hand selection:
Another important part of successful poker is knowing which hand to play and which to fold. By observing the following rules of thumb, you will already be one foot ahead of your opponents!
- Premium Hands (AA, KK, QQ, JJ, AK):
Play this hand almost always, you have a high chance of winning! - Strong Hands (10-10, 9-9, 8-8, AQ, AJ, KQ):
These hands are also strong and have a high chance of winning. Although less strong than premium hands, it is definitely recommended to play on with these hands. - Suited Connectors:
These are hands like 9-8 or 7-6. In other words, they are consecutive cards. These cards have high potential, but also possess more risk. Avoid bluffing with these cards in early position. - Medium and low pairs:
These hands also have high potential for winning (think Three of A Kind or even a Full House), but discard them if nothing good comes out after the flop! - Off Suited Hands: Hands like J-5, Q-7 and K-3 may seem like good hands, but they usually aren’t. If you cannot make a combination after the flop then it is recommended to fold.
- Unlinked Low Cards: This refers to hands such as 9-4, 8-3, and 7-2. It is recommended to fold immediately on these hands.
Bluffing and Semi Bluffing
Bluffing is a unique and unmissable part of poker. But it is important to use it strategically and carefully. Here are 3 strong bluffing tips to apply when playing poker.
- Be consistent. Make sure you bluff credibly and in straight line with your previous actions. Do you raise on the preflop? Then bet firmly on the flop and turn.
- Bluff at the right opponent. Don’t bluff against players who (almost) never fold.
- Only semi-bluff. Semi-bluff a hand that is not yet strong enough, but has the potential to win.
Online Poker Strategies for Profitable Play
Whether you are a beginner or an advanced poker player, applying the following poker strategies will increase your chances of winning and make you a top player in no time!
Tight-Aggressive Strategy
With this strategy, you are very selective about which hands you play. But when you play a hand, you bet aggressively. Therefore, play only strong hands, and fold when you have bad hands.
Loose-Aggressive Strategy
Players who choose this strategy play many hands. The aim here is to use many rounds, to make opponents make mistakes. While this strategy is certainly more risky, it can also pay off big against passive and predictable players.
Check Raising Strategy
The Check Raising strategy involves checking first, hoping that the next player raises, and then raising again up here. This strategy is excellent when you have a strong hand, but can also come at less value if your opponents also check.
