How do you play Blackjack?

But first the rules of the game. They are actually quite simple. But first we want to clear up a misunderstanding. The aim of BlackJack is not to get as close to 21 as possible, but to beat the bank (or ‘dealer’). To succeed, you must not go over 21 yourself and score better than the dealer (or make him go over 21). Here are eight more basic rules you need to know to play Blackjack.

Ground rules

1) Blackjack is played with 1 to 8 decks of cards, i.e. 52 to 312 cards.

2) The ace has a value of 1 or 11, cards with a picture count as 10.

3) The value of your hand is the sum of all cards. ‘Blackjack’ is the highest value. It consists of a 10 and an ace and beats any other 21 combination.

4) After you bet, all players are dealt 2 cards, including the dealer. One of the dealer’s cards is visible. If it is the ace, you can ‘insure’ (‘insurance’). You then bet separately on an insurance line for half your original bet. If the dealer has Blackjack, your insurance is paid out twice. This compensates for the loss of your original bet. Does the dealer not have Blackjack? Then your insurance bet is lost.

5) The game starts with the player to the left of the dealer. He or she has four options:

• ‘Stand’: the player keeps his current cards
• ‘Hit’: the player wants an extra card (and more if he wants). If he goes over 21, he ‘busts’.
• ‘Double’: the player doubles his bet and gets one extra card.
• ‘Split’: if you have two identical cards, you may double your bet and split the two identical cards. You then play with two hands and receive an extra card from the dealer for each hand. You then again have the choice of ‘stand’, ‘hit’ or ‘double’ for each hand.

6) Does the dealer go over 21? Then any player who stays under 21 wins.

7) Does the dealer not ‘bust’? Then the one with the highest value wins.

8) A win earns you double your bet. With Blackjack, you win 3 to 2.
