Roulette strategy: D’Alembert

D’Alembert

Are you familiar with D’Alembert’s famous roulette tragedy?

Introduction

The D’Alembert roulette strategy is one of the safest roulette strategies – much more prudent than, say, Martingale. The principle is simple: after every win, your bet drops by 1 euro; after every loss, you bet 1 euro more.

D’Alembert is only suitable for bets with single odds (red/black, even/even or 1-18/19-36). The strategy has similarities to Martingale or Fibonacci (you bet more after a loss), but is a lot safer than both.

At a loss: add 1 euro

Here’s how it works: you start with a bet of your choice and each time you lose, you add 1 euro. Do you win a game? Then the bet decreases, also by 1 euro. The theory ensures that with as many profit and loss games, you make a total profit equal to the number of games played.

An example to clarify:

Bet 5 and loss

Bet 6 and lose

Bet 7 and win

Bet 6 and lose

Bet 7 and win

Bet 6 and win

Bet 5 and lose

Bet 6 and win

Mathematically, that looks like this: 0 – 5 – 6 + 7 – 6 + 7 + 6 – 5 + 6 = 4

In the above game, you lost 4 times and won 4 times. Nevertheless, you made a total profit of 4 euros. This is at once D’Alembert’s golden rule: if you win as many games as you lose, you always make a profit.

Advantages of D’Alembert

No roulette strategy is 100 per cent safe – they all carry some risk – , but D’Alembert comes pretty close. You need only limited initial capital to play and still go home with a profit.

Disadvantages of D’Alembert

Potential profit margins are limited – which makes sense when the risk is low. On the other hand, even with a relatively long losing streak, you can still go home with a profit.

Inverse D’Alembert

Like Fibonacci and Martingale, the D’Alembert strategy also has an inverse variant. In it, you bet 1 euro more when you win and 1 euro less when you lose. Beware, this strategy is anything but risk-free! Even if you win as much as you lose, you still book a loss. The reverse D’Alembert is only interesting if you can record a nice profit series. As in the example below:

Bet 5 and win

Bet 6 and win

Bet 7 and win

Bet 8 and lose

Bet 7 and win

Bet 8 and win

Bet 9 and lose

Bet 8 and win

Bet 9 and win

Your total win amounts to 5 + 6 + 7 – 8 + 7 + 8 – 9 + 8 + 9 = 33
