Blackjack: How to Master the Basics

Blackjack is thought to be one of the most popular card games that can be played both in traditional land-based casinos and at online casinos. The game is played against the house on a table that is semi-circle and can fit anywhere from 2 to 7 people in traditional casinos.

If you play blackjack online, some versions allow an unlimited number of people. When you play the game online, you either play against a Random Number Generator (RNG) or a live dealer who works for the house. The rules are a little different in each form, but the basics of blackjack usually don’t change.

The Basic Rules of Blackjack

No matter how the game is played, the goal of blackjack is simple: you must beat the dealer’s hand without getting higher than a score of 21.

To get started, you draw a hand that is better than the dealer’s but not greater than 21. Furthermore, if the dealer gets a hand worth more than 21, the player wins. In the end, if you get a hand worth of 21 with the first two cards dealt and the dealer doesn’t, you win. If your hand value goes over 21 or the dealer’s hand value is higher than yours at the end of the round, you lose.

Total Value of a Hand

A game uses sets of 52 cards, and each card is worth the following number of points:

From 2 to 10, score the card’s face value.

Face cards (K, Q, and J) are worth 10 points each.

Either 1 or 11 is scored by an Ace.

Odds and payouts

It’s about 42.22% likely that you will win the whole game of blackjack. There is a 49.10% chance of a tie and an 8.48% chance of a loss. When it comes to blackjack payouts, they are:

  • If the dealer’s hand is higher than 21, everyone who is still in the game wins and gets their winnings in full.
  • You win and get 1x your bet if your hand value is better than the dealer’s.
  • If the first two cards you get are an Ace and a 10, this is called a “natural blackjack.” You win and get paid 3:2.
  • If your hand is the same as the dealer’s, you get your original bet back. But you don’t get the money from the bet.

Options for betting

At the start of a game round, players place their bets. You can make both the main bet and any of the side bets that are offered. Each person gets two cards that are face up. The dealer also gets two cards, one that is face up and one that is face down. After this, each person must make the following bet choices:

Hit: You get an extra card that makes your hand stronger. Any number of hits is fine as long as the player doesn’t go over 21. A player loses if their hand value goes over 21, which is called a Bust.

Stand: If you’re happy with your first two cards and don’t want to draw any more, you can Stand. They move on to the next player.

Double Down: You can choose to double your bet and get an extra card.

Split: If you make a second bet, the dealer will split your two cards.

Side bets and features in Blackjack

There are a few more side bet features that you can try, based on the type of game. Some of these are:

Surrender: You can turn in your hand and get half of your original stake back if you’re not happy with it.

Insurance: If you make an insurance bet, also called a “Even Money” bet, you’re betting that the dealer doesn’t have blackjack. If so, you win twice as much as you bet.

With this side bet, you can win extra money if you match the dealer’s up card with two of your own cards. The goal is to get card combos that pay out, like Three of a Kind or Flush.

Pairs: This side bet only affects the first two cards you are dealt. You will get paid if your pair is a Mixed Pair, a Coloured Pair, or a Perfect Pair if you bet on it.

Blackjack tips

Like any other gambling card game, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you get better at blackjack. Here are some of these tips:

Don’t waste your money on the Insurance or Even Money Bet. The idea sounds good, but these bets will drain your amount too quickly. The best blackjack players never risk their own money on this bet.

If you get a hard 11, double down: It’s more likely that you’ll win more money if you Double Down your bet if your first two cards add up to 11.

Always Split an Ace and an Eight: You should always split an Ace and an Eight, no matter what card the player has. Most of the time, the move leads to big gains.

Do not split 10-value cards: Play two 5s like a 10 all the time. That’s because if you Hit, you have a better chance of getting a 20.

If you’re winning a lot, raise your bet: If you win three hands in a row, you should increase your bet. Likewise, if you’re losing a lot, you should lower your bet.

Key terms used in Blackjack

There is some slang used in blackjack that every player should learn. Take note of these key terms:

House Edge: The edge the house is likely to have in each game.

Real blackjack: When you have an ace and a 10, J, K, Q, or K.

Flat Bet: Betting the same amount of money on each hand without any changes.

Draw a Card: In addition to the cards you already have, you draw one more card.

Late surrender: When you give up your hand and don’t make any more bets.
